Romans Chapter 1:7

Wendy's thoughts on related scriptures

Romans 1:7 TPT - May his joyous grace and total well-being, flowing from our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, rest upon you.

What a beautiful prayer - Jesus grace for us.

John 1:14-18 TPT - And so the Living Expression became a man and lived among us! And we gazed upon the splendor of his glory, the glory of the One and Only who came from the Father overflowing with tender mercy and truth! John taught the truth about him when he announced to the people, “He’s the One! Set your hearts on him! I told you he would come after me, even though he ranks far above me, for he existed before I was even born.” And now out of his fullness we are fulfilled! And from him we receive grace heaped upon more grace! Moses gave us the Law, but Jesus, the Anointed One, unveils truth wrapped in tender mercy. No one has ever gazed upon the fullness of God’s splendor except the uniquely beloved Son, who is cherished by the Father and held close to his heart. Now he has unfolded to us the full explanation of who God truly is!

Romans 1:7 AMP - [I am writing] to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called to be saints (God's people) and set apart for a sanctified life, [that is, set apart for God and His purpose]:

We are each set apart for God and His purpose

Romans 8:30 NLT - And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right-standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.

1 Peter 2:9-10 NIV - But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Ephesians 2:10 NKJV - For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Hebrews 10:10-12 GW - We have been set apart as holy because Jesus Christ did what God wanted him to do by sacrificing his body once and for all. Every day each priest performed his religious duty. He offered the same type of sacrifice again and again. Yet, these sacrifices could never take away sins. However, this chief priest made one sacrifice for sins, and this sacrifice lasts forever. Now he holds the honoured position - the one next to God the Father on the heavenly throne.

Romans Chapter 1:8

MacArthur Study Bible Notes

"your faith. The genuineness of their salvation. The testimony of the church in Rome was so strong that in A.D. 49 the emperor Claudius expelled all the Jews because of the influence of "Chrestus," which was undoubtedly a reference to Christ (cf. Acts 18:2)."

Matthew Henry's Commentary

- Through Jesus Christ. All our duties and performances are pleasing to God only through Jesus Christ, praises as well as prayers.

Wendy's thoughts on related scriptures

Roman 1:8 TPT - I give thanks to God for all of you, because it's through your conversion to Jesus Christ, that the testimony of your strong, persistent faith is spreading throughout the world.

Strong, persistent faith - how are we going with that?

Jesus speaking about prayer

Luke 18:6-8 TPT - The Lord continued, "Did you hear what the ungodly judge said - that he would answer her persistent request? Don't you know that God, the true judge, will grant justice to all of his chosen ones who cry out to him night and day? He will pour our his Spirit upon them. He will not delay to answer you and give you what you ask for. God will give swift justice to those who don't give up. So be every praying, ever expecting, just like the widow was with the judge. Yet when the Son of Man comes back, will he find this kind of persistent faithfulness in his people?

What if we feel we aren't persistent in our faith?

We can ask for God's help - Mark 9:24
We can accept God's mercy - it is new every morning - Lamentations 3:22-23

Romans 1:8 AMP - because your faith (your trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness) is being proclaimed in all the world.

What a great definition of faith - your trust and confidence in His power, wisdom and goodness.

What's an example of your life when you have had to trust in God's power? God's wisdom and God's goodness?

Hebrews 11:3 TPT - Faith empowers us to see that the universe was created and beautifully coordinated by the power of God's words! He spoke and the invisible realm gave birth to all that is seen.

Romans 1:8 NLT - ... your faith in him is being talked about all over the world.

Who is talking about our faith in Jesus?

Roman 1:8 The Message - I thank God through Jesus Christ for every one of you. That's first.

Be thankful for the people God brings in to our lives.

Romans Chapter 1:9

Matthew Henry's Commentary

One of the greatest kindnesses we can do our friends, and sometimes the only kindness that is in the power of our hands, is, by prayer to recommend them to the loving-kindness of God.

Wendy's thoughts on related scriptures

Romans 1:9a TPT - And God knows that I pray for you continually and at all times.

Pray for one another ...

Ephesians 6:18 The Message - In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other's spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.

Romans 1:9b GW - I serve God by spreading the Good News about his Son.

Question to consider: How are we serving ?

Romans 1:9b The Message - And God, whom I so love to worship and serve by spreading the news of his Son - the Message!

Jesus is the Good News - the best news we could ever hear about.

1 John 2:2 TPT - He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also the whole world.

Footnote: In these two verses we find three things that Christ is to us: (1) our forgiving Redeemer/Intercessor, (2) the Righteous One who suffered in our place, and (3) the atoning sacrifice for our sins, which cleanses and shelters us.

Romans 1:9b TPT - For I passionately serve and worship him with my spirit in the gospel of his Son.

Again that reminder about being servant, and also a worshipper. Remember the verse Kathryn spoke about last week...

Colossians 3:23-24 ESV - Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive your inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.

Wendy's thoughts on related scriptures

Romans 1:10 TPT - My desire and constant prayer is that I would be able to come and visit you, according to the plan and timing of God.

According to the plan and timing of God – waiting on God before doing something

Numbers 9:18 NKJV - At the command of the LORD the children of Israel would journey, and at the command of the LORD they would camp; as long as the cloud stayed above the tabernacle they remained encamped.

John 8:28 NLT - So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will understand that I am he. I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me.

Romans Chapter 1:11

MacArthur Study Bible Notes

"spiritual gift. The Gr. word translated "gift" is charisma, which means a "gift of grace" - a spiritual enablement whose source is the Spirit of God. Romans uses this same term to describe: 1) Christ Himself (5:15, 16); 2) general blessings from God (11:29; cf. 1 Tim 6:17); and 3) specific spiritual gifts given to members of the body to minister to the whole (12:6-8; cf 1 Cor. 12:1-31; 1 Pet 4:10,11). Paul probably intends to encompass all 3."

Wendy's thoughts on related scriptures

Romans 1:11 GW - I long to see you to share a spiritual blessing with you so that you will be strengthed.

Gathering is important. We grow together.

Matthew 18:20 TPT - For wherever two or three come together in honor of my name, I am right there with them!

Proverbs 27:17 NIV - As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Proverbs 27:17 TPT - It takes a grinding wheel to sharpen a blade, and so one person sharpens the character of another.

Derek Prince - Experiencing God's Power

Romans 1:12 For I long to impart to you the gift of the Spirit that will empower you to stand strong in your faith. Now, this means that when we come together and are side by side, something wonderful will be released. We can expect to be co-encouraged and co-comforted by each other’s faith!

When I read this scripture, it highlighted to me the importance of the being in a community of believers – the horizontal covenant relationship, and made me think about what I had read in Derek Prince’s book ….

The Marriage Covenant

Chapter 5: Union with God’s people

Covenant Relationships: Vertical and horizontal

Page 182 - These principles concerning covenant established in the Old Testament are carried over, unchanged, into the New Testament. When Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His disciples and shared with them the bread and the wine, He brought them into a covenant relationship with Himself by that act. After He handed them the cup and told them all to drink of it, He said, “This is My blood of the covenant” (Matt 26:28 NAS). They not merely shared the cup of the covenant with Him; they also shared it with each other. The same solemn act that brought each of them into covenant with Jesus, at the same time brought them all into covenant with one another.  From then on, their covenant relationship was not merely vertical, to Jesus; it was also horizontal, to each other.

Page 184

All who have entered into the new covenant in Christ are required to behave in the following ways toward one another:

  • Wash one another’s feet (John 13:14)
  • Love one another (John 13:34)
  • Build up one another (Romans 14:19)
  • Accept one another (Romans 15:7)
  • Admonish one another (Romans 15:14)
  • Greet one another (Romans 16:16)
  • Serve one another (Galatians 5:13)
  • Bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2)
  • Show forbearance to one another (Ephesians 4:2)
  • Forgive one another (Ephesians 4:32)
  • Be subject to one another (Ephesians 5:21)
  • Teach one another (Colossians 3:16)
  • Comfort one another (1 Thessalonians 4:18)
  • Encourage one another (Hebrews 3:13)
  • Stimulate one another to love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24)
  • Confess their sins to one another (James 5:16)
  • Pray for one another (James 5:16)
  • Be hospitable to one another (1 Peter 4:9)
  • Be clothed with humility toward one another (1 Peter 5:5)

Wendy's thoughts on related scriptures

Romans 1:12 TPT - Now, this means that when we come together and are side by side, something wonderful will be released. We can expect to be co-encouraged and co-comforted by each other's faith!

What a blessing to be co-encouraged and co-comforted

1 Thessalonians 5:11 - So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

Also made me think about when Moses was tired in the battle and Aaron and Hur held up his arms. We need to hold up each other in prayer, and practically when needed.

Exodus 17:11-14 AMP - Now when Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and when he lowered his hand [due to fatigue], Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands were heavy and he grew tired. So they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side and one on the other side; so it was that his hands were steady until the sun set. So Joshua overwhelmed and defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Romans Chapter 1:13

The Passion Translation Footnotes

Or "have been hindered" (due to missionary work). There is no implication that the devil hindered Paul from coming, but rather, the missionary work of ministering in Turkey (Asia Minor) hindered him.

MacArthur Study Bible Notes

"fruit. Scripture catalogs 3 kinds of spiritual fruit: 1) spiritual attitudes that characterise a Spirit-led believer (Gal 5:22,23); 2) righteous actions (6:22; Phil 4:16, 17' Heb 13:15); and 3) new converts. In this context, Paul is probably referring to the third one - a desire that was eventually realised during his imprisonment in Rome. (Phil 4:22)."

Wendy's thoughts on related scriptures

Romans 1:13 AMP - (and have been prevented so far)

God's timing is critical - sometimes we aren't ready (character; resources), sometimes we haven't finished what God wants us to do, sometime others aren't ready.

Romans 1:13 NLT - See spiritual fruit, just as I have seen among other Gentiles.

Each of us, encouraging each other to grow more in the fruit of the Spirit. Why? authentically show Christ's love to others.

Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

2 Peter 1:3-8 NIV His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

MacArthur Study Bible Notes

"barbarians. A derisive term coined by the Greeks for all who had not been trained in Gr. language and culture. When someone spoke in another language, it sounded to the Greeks like "bar-bar-bar," or unintelligible chatter. Although in the narrowest sense "barbarian" reffered to the uncultured, uneducated masses, it was often used to describe all non-Greeks - the unwise of the world."

Wendy's thoughts on related scriptures

Romans 1:14 TPT - Love obligates me to preach to everyone, to those who are among the elite and those who are among the outcasts, to those who are wise and educated as well was to those who are foolish and unlearned.

God is no respecter of persons. The Gospel is for everyone. And God will use anyone to get His message of love to people.

Acts 10:34 NLT - Then Peter replied, "I see very clearly that God shows no favouritism."

Acts 10:34-36 The Message – Peter fairly exploded with his good news: “It’s God’s own truth, nothing could be plainer: God plays no favourites! It makes no difference who you are or where you’re from – if you want God and are ready to do as he says, the door is open. The Message he sent to the children of Israel – that through Jesus Christ everything is bring put together again – well, he’s doing it everywhere, among everyone.

Romans 1:14 NLT - For I have a great sense of obligation to people in both the civilised world and the rest of the world, to the educated and uneducated alike.

We too have an obligation to all people - to the ends of the earth

Mark 16:15 NLT - And then he told them, "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone."

Matthew 28:16-20 - Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshipped him - but some of them doubted! Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Romans 1:14 The Message - Everyone I meet - it matters little whether they're mannered or rude, smart or simple - deepens my sense of interdependence and obligation.

Interdependence on God ....

John 5:19 NIV - Jesus gave them this answer: "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

Interdependence on people ...

1 Corinthians 12:12-27 NIRV - There is one body, but it has many parts. But all its many parts make up one body. It is the same with Christ.... All of them will take care of one another. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part is honored, every part shares in its joy. You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is part of it.

Obligation to God ...

1 John 4:19 NIV - We love because he first loved us.

1 John 4:19 TPT - Our love for others is our grateful response to the love God first demonstrated to us.

Obligation to People ...

Luke 15:7 NLT - In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God that over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven't strayed away!

Be Right - How to be right with God, yourself, and others - By Warren W. Wiersbe

"Two different Greek words are translated "ready" in the King James Version. One means "prepared," as in Acts 21:31. "I am ready ... to dies at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus." The other one, used in Romans 1:15, means "eager, with a ready mind." Paul was not eager to die, though he was prepared to die. But he was eager to visit Rome that he might minister to the believers there. It was not the eagerness of a sightseer, but the eagerness of a soul winner."
Page 22

Wendy's thoughts on related scriptures

Romans 1:15 NKJV - So, as much as in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also.

Be ready to preach the gospel wherever and whenever God leads you to – we have feet shod with the gospel.

Ephesians 6:15 GW– Put on your shoes so that you are ready to spread the Good News that gives peace.

Romans 1:15 The Message - And that's why I can't wait to get to you in Rome, preaching this wonderful good news of God.

How can we share the good news of the gospel?

Mark 16:15 TPT - And he said to them, “As you go into all the world, preach openly the wonderful news of the gospel to the entire human race!

Paul was reaching out to others - spreading the gospel to the ends of the earth.
How are we doing that? For each other? For our friends? For people we don't know?

What the Bible teachers about small groups By Rick Warren

  • The worshipped (verses 42,47)
  • The ministered to one another (verse 45)
  • They evangelised the lost (verse 47)
